That may not be what you\u2019ve been thinking, but nevertheless\u2026 I\u2019m starting a podcast.<\/p>\n
The first episode came out today.<\/p>\n
The name of the podcast is Paying Attention<\/em>.<\/p>\n The title comes from a Mary Oliver poem that includes this passage:<\/p>\n Instructions for living a life:<\/p>\n Pay attention.<\/p>\n Be astonished.<\/p>\n Tell about it.<\/p>\n Pay attention.<\/strong> Be present. Notice. Be awake.<\/p>\n Be astonished.<\/strong> The world is full of wonder. And so are the people in it. Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote, \u201cThe world is charged with the grandeur of God.\u201d So, let\u2019s be curious. Let\u2019s be astonished by what we see.<\/p>\n Tell about it.<\/strong> Don\u2019t just keep what you see and feel inside. Tell about it. Share. Express. Write. Talk.<\/p>\n That\u2019s what we are going to do on this podcast:<\/p>\n Pay attention.<\/p>\n Be astonished.<\/p>\n Tell about it.<\/p>\n The podcast is oriented towards education and education related topics in Fort Worth. But broader than that, I want us to pay attention to interesting Fort Worth people who are doing interesting and good things in the world. Upcoming episodes will include conversations with Trenace Dorsey-Hollins, leader of Parent Shield, FWISD Superintendent Karen Molinar, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, and Pete Geren, President of the Sid W. Richardson Foundation.<\/p>\n Our first episode is being released today and features a conversation with my colleague Leila Santill\u00e1n\u00a0in which we talk about FWEP\u2019s latest report: High School and Beyond<\/a><\/em>. For the past five years, we at FWEP<\/a>\u00a0have used state test results measuring the\u00a0number of students meeting grade level<\/a>\u00a0to inform parents\u00a0and\u00a0the public about how students are doing in\u00a0school. With the High School and Beyond<\/em>\u00a0report, we take it a step further. We look\u00a0beyond\u00a0the test to measure real-life outcomes\u2014whether students graduate high school, enroll in\u00a0higher education,\u00a0and\u00a0ultimately earn a degree.<\/p>\n As I often say, it\u2019s not about the test. It\u2019s about what the test tells us about students\u2019 lives. And we know that a young adult who does not earn a two-or four-year degree has only a 12% chance of earning a living wage.<\/p>\n This new report and the conversation Leila and I have on the podcast about it add a new perspective to our community\u2019s conversation about public education,\u00a0and\u00a0we hope it helps leaders, educators,\u00a0and\u00a0families better understand the challenges\u00a0and\u00a0opportunities facing our students.<\/p>\n I hope you\u2019ll listen to the first episode of Paying Attention<\/em>.
